OM SWASTYASTU ”

(A Balinese greeting which means prayers for auspiciousness and well-being to all )

My name is Wayan Murjana . I am an ARTIST also a GUIDE . I lead a rice paddy field and herb walk from Keliki Village to Bedulu Village .

I live in a small, rural traditional village tucked a way in a hidden valley of the rice fields of Bedulu village. I am an Artist also Naturalist, I am interested in toxicology, later led to the study of the chemistry and use of plants, exploring the relationships between human immune function and plants chemistry also I established to offer sustainable primary health care solution to the peoples in the village where I live, in the form of living pharmacies and food forest. This knowledge has been passed down and refined from generation to generation. I am extended family utilized traditional healing techniques and relied on natural remedies concocted from local plants and herbs.

I am very interesting to share these Educational and ecological knowledge with my guests to knowing many use of local plants/ herb a long the walk.

I lead walking tours through rice fields, rural villages, spice plantations and tropical forest. The walk it,s take 2 to 3 hours (note: shorter treks are possible) My 7-km trek usually start from Keliki village it,s 20 minutes drive north of Ubud and end up in my village. Along the way, I will explain about Balinese culture and the Balinese spiritual believe also rice cultivation, the Irrigation of Subak system and also about medicinal herbs and plants. At the end of the trek. You are invited to my home so that you can see how a traditional family compound and home looks like. My family will cook you an authentic Balinese meal.

Bedulu village is located 20 minutes drive eastern of Ubud is one of the villages in Bali with the most temples. The culture and spiritual belief are very strong also my village is one of the five styles of traditional Balinese styles of painting originated from my village; hence this type of paintings are simply called the Bedulu style. I am an ARTIST who paints in this traditional style that is characterized by black and white detailed drawings that depict traditional village life and ceremonies. Prior to the introduction of colors by western artist who resided in Bali in the early twentieth century , all traditional Bedulu style only in black Chinese ink. I learned this art from my grandfather who was very famous artist in my village, I now teach this style of painting to many children from my village, hoping that a few of them will continue this traditional art form.

I am fortunate my paintings have been exhibited and sold by several major art museums and galleries in Bali and are collected by many local and overseas art lovers. However ,because I am very passionate about keeping the traditional art true and alive, I do not churn out low quality paintings every few week just to sell to collectors. In fact, it sometime takes me 12 to 18 months to complete one painting.
